Im Mai 2024 Jahres reisten Prof. Dr. Nina Röder und Evelyn Solinski mit einer Gruppe Studierender des Fachbereichs Art & Design des Campus Hamburg für eine Woche auf die Insel Borkum. Die Studierenden haben während ihres Aufenthalts auf der Insel das Wattenmeer mittels unterschiedlicher inhaltlicher Perspektiven und bildsprachlichen Strategien fotografiert. Die daraus entstandene Ausstellung lud dazu ein, die faszinierende Landschaft und das fragile Ökosystem des Wattenmeers durch neue fotografische und künstlerische Blickwinkel zu entdecken.

Das interdisziplinäre Forschungsprojekt der University of Europe for Applied Sciences (UE) untersucht die ökologische, kulturelle und soziale Bedeutung des UNESCO-Weltnaturerbes Wattenmeer auf der Insel Borkum. Das Projekt verfolgt das Ziel, durch die Verbindung von Wissenschaft und Kunst innovative Perspektiven zu entwickeln, die den Schutz und die nachhaltige Entwicklung dieses einzigartigen Lebensraums fördern. Unter der Leitung von Evelyn Solinski (UE Publishing Practices), Prof. Dr. Nina Röder (Fotografie), Prof. Dr. Iris Lorscheid (Datenanalyse), Prof. Dr. Silke Heuse (Umweltpsychologie), Prof. Jan Haux (Speculative Design), Prof. Christian Meyer zu Ermgassen (Editorielle Illustration) haben Studierende aus den Bereichen Fotografie, Illustration, Film & Motion Design, Kommunikationsdesign, Digital Business & Data Science und Psychologie das Wattenmeer aus verschiedenen Blickwinkeln untersucht.
Im Rahmen des Projekts wurde das Buch AM WATT als Publikation realisiert. Das Buch bringt die vielfältigen Perspektiven aus Wissenschaft und Kunst zusammen und stellt einen wichtigen Beitrag zur ökologischen und kulturellen Reflexion über das Wattenmeer dar.
Die Relevanz der Publikation AM WATT liegt in der zunehmenden Dringlichkeit, den Schutz des Wattenmeeres und anderer empfindlicher Ökosysteme angesichts des globalen Klimawandels voranzutreiben. Das Wattenmeer ist nicht nur ein einzigartiges Naturerbe, sondern auch ein Schlüsselökosystem für die Biodiversität und den Klimaschutz. Die Verbindung von wissenschaftlicher Forschung mit künstlerischer Reflexion bietet einen innovativen Ansatz, um komplexe Umweltfragen einer breiten Öffentlichkeit zugänglich zu machen. In Zeiten des Klimawandels, in denen nachhaltige Lösungen dringend erforderlich sind, bietet das Buch konkrete Handlungsempfehlungen für den Tourismus und setzt kreative Impulse für die ökologische Transformation. Es fördert das Bewusstsein für den Wert der Natur und regt zu verantwortungsbewusstem Handeln an – sowohl auf individueller als auch auf gesellschaftlicher Ebene.

In May 2024, Prof. Dr. Nina Röder and Evelyn Solinski traveled with a group of students from the Art & Design department at the Hamburg campus to the island of Borkum for a week. During their stay on the island, the students photographed the Wadden Sea from various thematic perspectives and with different visual strategies. The resulting exhibition invited visitors to discover the fascinating landscape and the fragile ecosystem of the Wadden Sea through new photographic and artistic viewpoints.

As part of the project, the book AM WATT was published. The book brings together diverse perspectives from science and art, making a significant contribution to ecological and cultural reflection on the Wadden Sea.
The relevance of the publication AM WATT lies in the growing urgency to advance the protection of the Wadden Sea and other fragile ecosystems in the face of global climate change. The Wadden Sea is not only a unique natural heritage but also a key ecosystem for biodiversity and climate protection. Combining scientific research with artistic reflection offers an innovative approach to making complex environmental issues accessible to a wider audience. In times of climate change, where sustainable solutions are urgently needed, the book provides concrete recommendations for tourism and sets creative impulses for ecological transformation. It raises awareness of the value of nature and encourages responsible action—both on an individual and societal level.
